Smartphones provide more possibilities in travel survey, they can record the locations of phone users during a long period. With the popularity of the smartphone in recent years, it has become an advanced medium for travel data acquisition. To figure out what role can smartphones play in today’s travel survey, we conducted a two-month smartphone travel survey among more than 100(around 50 per campus) students at Siping Road Campus and Jiading Campus in Tongji University. We then analyzed and compared their travel behaviors based on data collected in this survey. It is found that smartphone locations have enough precision to extract individual’s trips automatically. However, travel purposes are hard to obtain by smartphones.
